Taxi price across Malé seemed to be fixed at 30 Rupees or around $2. Most places are within walking distance in the capital really. The speedboat price to Maafushi from Male or the airport was also fixed by the government at $25 USD each way (you can pay in local currency as well). This was nice so you didn't have different companies trying to overcharge you as would happen in some other countries.
There are so many water activities on offer, this would quickly deplete the travel funds without some restraint, but are highly recommended. Getting to outer atolls and remote islands seems like a special part of the Maldives experience. I hired a jetski, went parasailing, snorkeled with dolphins and went on a dozen different boats including the public ferries...
I had Maldives on my list of places to travel to for a very long time, ever since living in the UAE where it is heavily promoted as a holiday destination. For one reason or another I wasn't able to make it here at that time. I saw a drone shot of Male recently and knew it was time to go.
When I found out Air Asia is flying to the Maldives and there are no COVID restrictions, I bought my tickets. It's been a great adventure so far. I hope you can also check it out.... it's worth the effort!
